Uzivikele “Empower yourself with knowledge”
Tholulwazi
Uzivikele is an Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) located in rural
northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and was started to address
the overwhelming HIV epidemic affecting 1 in 8 people in our community
and leaving over 3,000 orphans in its wake. Although small, our
organization has made giant strides in increasing the quality of
life of people living with HIV or dying from AIDS and in looking
after the children this disease has left behind.
Our orphan programme
provides many orphans and vulnerable children with assistance in
getting identity documents and government grants, social welfare
intervention, healthcare, emotional and psychosocial workshops,
school uniforms, food parcels and school breakfasts. These services
aim to help children survive their childhood free from abuse, malnutrition,
HIV and crippling emotional trauma. We also strive to give orphans
and vulnerable children the tools necessary to build themselves
up and to break free from the poverty cycle.
With
a community volunteer base of over 200, our home based care programme
empowers the people in our community with the skills necessary to
care for those suffering from AIDS and the knowledge to protect
those who are not already infected.
